runaway monkey!

For those of you keeping tabs on Lucky the Biting Attack Monkey (okay, that's me and Iain only), you may be interested to know that she garnered international headlines by briefly escaping from captivity, only to be re-captured less than 24 hours later:

(Thank you, Ben, for the link!)

... didn't even notice Fuji in this photo till I put it on my computer!

2010 in pictures

I am woefully bad at organizing pictures, which I suppose isn't that surprising when you consider the ridiculous amount of photos that I take; but at the very least, here are some highlights from 2010, which started on a bridge in Edinburgh and ended in my dad's Los Angeles kitchen with Iain and Lauren, two of my favorite people in the world (we were shortly joined by two more: Lenora and my dad! That's a pretty good tally for me, since pretty much everyone I care about lives in a different city.)

sub-freezing kanuki...

... is a bit more desolate than usual, but still gorgeous: photos are from yesterdays climb to the top, with two of my students - neither of whom had visited Kanuki before!

There fewer cats and people along the way; I suspect the cats waited in warmer areas till they were certain any visitors had food with them. We didn't, so they left us alone.

Kanuki at sunset is a good idea in theory, though maybe not on days where the wind chill pushes the temperature below freezing. The photo above was one of the last times I could take off my mittens.

Afterwards, much cake and coffee was required to warm up. Above is The Blue Water, which vies with B-House for my favorite source of cake in Numazu .

Now that Sari and Kate have headed back to the States, we are settling back into our normal routine, though our weekends have now taken on a faintly urgent pitch - with only two and a half months left, there's suddenly so much to see that we've lazily neglected for our entire time here. Even though the cold outside makes me want to spend all my free time inside knitting in front of our kerosene heater, I'm all too aware that time slips by all too fast here, and so we are definitely trying to get out and explore as much as much as possible before it's time to pack up.

how to get thrown out of a japanese gym

As you can see from the photos, Iain and I decided to commemorate our time in California by getting tattoos. Or not. Thanks, Candy, for the awesome Christmas presents!

senbon at sunset

Last week, my old roommate Kate and her friend Sari came to visit us in Numazu! We were so excited to see them both, and to get the chance to show off our favorite places - particularly Senbon beach, which graced us with some amazingly gorgeous clear weather.

There was a New Years tree sculpture of some sort down on the beach (above).

happy 2011!

Happy 2011! We are back in Numazu after a whirlwind visit to California; it was beyond wonderful to see my family and friends, and I felt very lucky to have had the chance to spend some time with them all, however briefly. 2010 was a great year: we were so lucky to have gotten our jobs and to have spent so much time in Japan, in this beautiful part of the country by the mountains and the beach. Though I'm not a hundred percent sure exactly where we'll geographically find ourselves throughout the year to come, I am still crazy excited for the things I know 2011 holds, particularly returning to Hanoi and spending more time at home with my family.

We arrived back here on Tuesday, about 24.5 hours after waking up at 3:40 at my dad's house to catch our cab to LAX, and immediately plunged back into work and - more excitingly - a visit from my old New York roommate, Kate. Things should be slowing down a bit more now, so, more updates to follow, hopefully. In the meantime, happy year of the rabbit!
