crash!

I was feeling quite proud of myself for not crashing during the two days we drove over horrible roads to get to Ba Be, so of course I crashed the day we left Ba Be on a far more reasonable road. It wasn't very interesting (though I think I horrified a bunch of little kids on the side of the road who saw me crash ... sorry, guys), nor was it particularly serious, though I did land pretty hard on my wrist (I got an x ray later, and it was OK). After driving a few more kilometers, it became more painful to make that revving motion you have to make with your right hand, and it became pretty obvious that there was no way I'd be able to get to Cao Bang before dark. Fortunately, because he is a hero, Iain managed to hire two random dudes on the side of the road to drive my bike for me to the next town, and then get me and and my bike both onto the next bus to Cao Bang. Literally - I was a bit alarmed by how readily the bus company agreed to take the bike, but, as you can see from the video, they definitely look like they've done it before.

So, long story short, I ended up finishing the second half of the trip ingloriously on the bus, meeting up with Iain in each town at their bus stop, and learned that rooftop is but one of many ways in which a Vietnamese bus is willing to accommodate a Honda Wave (other ways include dismantling it and shoving it underneath, or else carrying it inside and wedging it into the aisle, much to acute annoyance of everyone else).  Riding the bus itself was actually quite nice - I got to make small talk with people in my crap Vietnamese, and take in the scenery a lot more, as well as enjoy the godlike thrill of power that comes when your bus sounds a colossally loud horn and overtakes just about everyone on the road so it can whip that much faster around a turn. Good times! Fortunately for my ego, my last bus to Hanoi actually dropped me off in a suburb, which meant I did get to drive back into Hanoi proper triumphantly on my motorbike.

the route

Over the past twelve days or so, we drove to former French hill station Tam Dao...

... from Tam Dao to provincial capital Tuyen Quang...

... from Tuyen Quang to the small town of Na Hang...

... from Na Hang to a road that turned into a giant rock quarry with no end in sight, so we decided to double back, lose a day, and then set out via alternate route (and what turned out to be worse roads)...

... to get to Ba Be lake, where we spent 3 days lazing around...

... then headed further north to Cao Bang, where we spent a few more days visiting caves and waterfalls...

... then drove back down Route 3, spending the night in Bac Kan before driving back to Hanoi yesterday afternoon. Or, more accurately, Iain drove all the way back to Hanoi. I ingloriously crashed my bike and hurt my wrist* on the way out of Ba Be, and so actually the latter half of this trip was a bus trip for me, rather than a bike trip. Not the most heroic story, but well worth learning a) that while a Wave can drive over a veritable quarry of rocks, it is best to steer clear of a single rock lying innocently in the road all on its own, and b) that there are myriad logic-defying ways to wedge a Honda Wave into and onto a Vietnamese bus.

Misadventures and all, it was an awesome trip! I can't think of a better way to have celebrated our three year anniversary together.

* not like, seriously, hurt, but just sore enough that neither Iain nor I thought it would be a good idea to try to drive on it - don't worry Dad!

A lotus at the Silver Pavillion in Phnom Pehn

So sorry to be on radio silence lately; I am happily back in Hanoi and even more happily back from a totally uneventful stay at the Hanoi French Hospital, where I was checked in after stupidly waiting around to get a problem with my eyes checked, which turned out to be an acute case of uvetis, which can cause blindness and which the doctor was concerned could be a symptom of myraid other diseases, which is why I got to spend two days sitting around in a fetching hospital gown with an IV in my arm, undergoing various tests. I feel pretty silly about the whole thing, especially since it screwed up plans for the next two weeks, but probably shouldn't complain, as I can still, you know, see and stuff. And I got to take home my chest x-rays, so hey, wall art for when I finally find an apartment here.

Last Day

Not pictured: the couple trying to enjoy their romantic evening about three feet to my left; me, being an annoying, anonymous third wheel on about seven different dates.

From the parking lot at the Rockridge Long's Drugs.

A few last images of the Bay Area to last me till I get back; on Valentine's Day I drove up to Grizzly Peaks to take photos of the sunset, not realizing that the cliffs would be overpopulated with scads of couples trying to have a nice evening without me and my camera wandering around them. Because I'm a) scattered on the best of days and b) thoroughly braindead after the last not-awesome month and a half, I locked my keys in my rental car (left them dangling in the ignition, actually, right after congratulating myself on remembering to lock the non-automatic doors) and spent a few panicked moments thinking I'd be marooned somewhere on Grizzly Peaks in the dark and the cold all alone. Fortunately, because I am a) scattered and b) braindead, I did not, in fact, lock *all* the doors to the car, and so skirted extreme pathos by crawling in the backseat. I bet everyone is really glad I'm about to go wander all over the planet now all by myself, right?

I started writing this at the Rockridge Starbucks yesterday in the midst of running a flurry of last minute errands (extra memory card! advil! groceries for a gigantic dinner I decided to cook for everyone!) but the wireless kept flaking out, so I'm actually writing this in the international terminal at SFO (where I have about 2 hours left on my Starbucks-purchased T-Mobile access!), where I am drinking overpriced tea and trying not to get all panicky at the thought of being somewhere utterly unfamiliar for quite so long after spending a nice, soothing week at home with puppies and family and way too many excursions along Skyline. But it's okay, because in 12 hours I will be in Japan (Oh my god, I'll be in Japan!) and then I promise to start writing more coherently (ha) and not overusing astericks, "awesome" or parentheticals. Right.
